Outdoor Watering 2

Home Up

Let's take another look at outdoor watering for your cage.  My main problem out here at the lake is that the water from the well is way too cold to use for watering my Chameleons.  Last year I saved a few dollars with a rather complex setup involving a solar heated watering system.  It's a bit complex but it does work well and it is fairly inexpensive.  Check it out here.

This year it's time to spend a few $$$ and make a really good system.  This system is much simpler and probably much more reliable.

For this project you will need a 5 gallon 120V water heater (1500W or lower), hose, in-line water timer (Watermaster by Orbit), 1/4" drip tubing, 1/4" drip tubing, misting nozzles.  All parts available from Home Depot (except the water heater which I purchased at Canadian Tire).

Step 1:  Run your cold tap water into your water heater.

Hooking up a water heater is a bit tricky but not too bad.  You can read all the details here.  Remember to check the temperature carefully or you will boil your Chams!!!!

Step 2:  Get the water into the cage on regular intervals.

I decided to go with an in-line water timer (Watermaster by Orbit) from Home Depot.  This timer can be programmed for up to 4 intervals and works great.  Just run your hose from the water heater's warm water output through the timer valve.

Step 3:  Hook up the Manifold

Now that you have warm water flowing on regular intervals you need to reduce the pressure and distribute the water via standard 1/4" lines.  I used an Apollo 4 Dripmaster manifold but you may need the Apollo  8 which has more outlets.  Either is available from Home Depot.

I have an additional T from my hot water heater into the frame of my large outdoor cage.  The water travels through the frame of the cage and exits from misting nozzles screwed into the frame.  If you want to take a look just Click Here.

Step 4:  Hook up your Dripper Hose

Now that you have your water running on 1/4" lines out to your cages you need a nice drip system.  I used dripper hose available from Home Depot.  It's black and slowly leaks nice sized droplets all along it's length.  You will probably also want to use a T connector and run additional misting nozzles.
